Family Planning
At Women’s Personal Physicians in Miami, Florida, we offer the most effective family planning options available. Our gynecologists will explain all your options, from IUDs to permanent birth control and will help you decide which is best for you.
Types of Birth Control
IUDs:
Mirena® releases small amounts of the hormone levonorgestrel into your uterus to provide continuous birth control for up to 5 years.
Paragard® is a hormone-free device that prevents pregnancy for up to 10 years. It is wrapped with a thin copper coil, which interferes with sperm movement and egg fertilization, and may help prevent implantation.
NuvaRing®:
This small device made of plastic is inserted into the vagina once a month. It releases a continuous low dose of the hormones estrogen and progestin (the same hormones in birth control pills). Together, these hormones prevent pregnancy.
Birth Control Pills:
This is a very popular contraception method used by millions of women every day. Birth control pills deliver a small amount of hormone(s) to the body and are taken every day of the month. They regulate periods and prevent pregnancies. There are a variety of birth control pills available and your doctor will work with you to find the one best suited for you.
Tubal Ligation:
A tubal ligation is a surgical procedure (commonly referred to as "getting your tubes tied") designed to permanently prevent male sperm from fertilizing the female egg by cutting or tying the fallopian tubes. You may be able to reverse the procedure later on.
Nexplanon®:
This is a form of contraception that is implanted in the upper arm, releasing a low dose of progestin (but not estrogen) and is effective for about three years.
Depo-Provera:
Also known as the depo shot, this birth control injection contains the hormone progestin which prevents ovulation. Without an egg in the fallopian tubes, pregnancy cannot occur. The depo shot also makes cervical mucus thicker, preventing sperm from getting through.
